As I have mentioned recently the everyday rain has finally stopped and the river has cleared!! We are having multiple “big fish” days on the river now, fishing in TN with big Trout!! This includes at least 25 pounders (most days) and a recent 56-pound company record “monster” Striper last Tuesday! NOW IS THE TIME TO COME! Building on the company’s successful 75 – 150hp FourStroke outboards, the new V-6 extends Mercury’s FourStroke offering to the 175 / 200 / 225hp levels and expands the company’s commercial SeaPro lineup to 200hp. The new Mercury FourStrokes are precision engineered from skeg to cowl. HUMMINBIRD COMBO GPS AND FISH FINDER UNITS My Humminbird Helix 12 “Chirp” Fish Finder is a guide’s best friend. I am posting today on AN INVENTIVE TRICK I use to amplify all aspects of my sonar functions including standard 2-D sonar, down imaging and side imaging! The trick is to have a separate Humminbird “TRANSOM XNT 9 20 TM” transducer mounted ON EACH SIDE OF THE BOAT on the transom. The cables for these two Humminbird transducers are then connected to a Humminbird “AS SIDB Y” Y splitter then plugged into the back of my Helix 12 “Chirp”. I have attached a photo below of how these two Humminbird transducers are mounted on my 24-foot Alweld Escort Bay. I happen to have “Ponsoons” on my boat (which I love for a quick hole shot and stability) and the two Humminbird transducers are mounted on the Ponsoons. BUT YOU CAN DO THIS ON YOUR BOAT AS WELL EVEN WITHOUT PONSOONS! In long discussions with Humminbird Engineers (when I first got my Alweld) and in meeting one of the head Humminbird technical specialist representatives up on Green River Lake in KY several years back, I learned of the BENEFITS of dual transducers. In a single transducer, if you are splitting the screen with (for example) down imaging and 2-D imaging on one side of the screen (stacked) and then side imaging on the other side, all of these functions are “splitting up the power” of the single transducer. But in using DUAL TRANSDUCERS, with the way the Y Splitter and the Helix 12 (or any non-Mega unit) separates the signal input, the side imaging function is using the FULL POWER of a single transducer for each side. Simultaneously, the down imaging draws from one transducer from one side and the 2 D imaging drawing from the transducer from the other side! THE RESULTS ARE PHENOMINAL! More power – greater clarity. It may not be quite as clear as the new "Mega" imaging BUT WITH TWICE THE POWER for down and side imaging with dual transducers, with my Helix 12 Chirp I can identify individual fish, bait fish, great cover and structure where the big 40 to 50 pound girls hang out! For Cumberland River fishing I generally use the Side Imaging function only. Having the full power of a single transducer FOR EACH SIDE gives me tremendous clarity on my Helix 12 “Chirp”! I will post some recorded imaging in the near future showing this! Humminbird Side and Down Imaging Fish Finder / GPS units are simply the best on the market! When you have to depend on your marine electronics to navigate safely at night and in the fog, as well as help you find fish, it is one of your most valuable tools!
