This elk is dedicated to my brother Cameron Hanes. Everything I know about bow hunting I learned from him, and he's the best. It's an honor to call him a friend and his mentoring me is something I'll forever be grateful for. Occasionally you run into people in life that are so dedicated, focused and driven that it makes you take everything you do to the next level. Cam is that guy. The walking, breathing definition of the real deal. The best bowhunter on the planet, a tireless worker, humble, honest and always looking to challenge himself to the extreme. Having friends like that are one of the greatest resources you can acquire in this crazy life. Archery is an insanely difficult and incredibly rewarding discipline, and in my opinion bow hunting is the most powerful expression of it. Thank you, Cam, I will forever be in your debt. All the meat we eat in my house is from animals I've killed myself. My goal this year was to have my home completely out of the factory farming system and now I've reached it. I know people on social media love to get pissed off at pictures of dead animals, and hilariously many of them eat meat. Completely detached from the process of taking a life themselves they somehow feel innocent of any cruelty because they're just handing money over to the guy at the counter of the burger shop. Another even dumber argument is that you shouldn't hunt because you don't "have" to, and that if you want to eat meat it's somehow better to kill an animal that's been raised for food rather than a wild animal. I completely reject that. I'm not passing judgment on anyone that wants to get a steak from a supermarket or order chicken from a restaurant but it is the height of convenient, ignorant thinking to believe that somehow that's better than killing the animal yourself. In the end, if you want to eat meat, something has to die, and if you love animals and you have pets, something has to die to feed them too.
