We finally did it!!! I have been on a quest to catch a giant swordfish off Islamorada for over 12 years and that came to an end today!! We caught a dolphin on the way offshore and then started sword dropping by 8:45 am. After 5 drops without a bite I thought we were gonna fly the skunk flag for swords. My uncle was 20 miles east of me and had released two already and was battling his third. At 1:42 Patrick walked away from the rod and it loaded up. I told he we were tight and he asked if I was joking. This was no joke. After a few minutes we got him in the stand up harness and he went to work. The fish didn’t do anything crazy in the beginning, but after ten minutes it started to swim the lead up. I figured it was a decent one but didn’t know we had a sea monster on. After twenty five minutes I got the lead off and then ten minutes later we got a look at the fish. I knew it was big, at least 300 maybe 400 lbs. The fish went down a little after that and ten minutes later raced back to the surface. The next ten minutes was wild! The fish as racing around in circles on top and I was running the boat around it between 10-15 knots so it didn’t get underneath us! I thought the erratic moves would tire it out, but it didn’t. The next hour was a tug of war. Patrick pulled as hard as he could on the stand up rod and the fish finally gave up at the two hour mark. I hit the fish with the dart and put my new STANZ gaff in it. However, the work wasn’t done. I knew the fish was 400+, so we got the block and tackle hooked up to pull it in the boat. It didn’t come easy though. It took another 30 minutes to get it over the side of the Freeman Boatworks!! When the fish hit the deck Patrick and I hi fived. It was truly a fish of a lifetime!! When we measured it I knew it was big, real big. It was still bent though, so I didn’t have an accurate lower jaw fork measurement. We punched it for Bud N' Mary's Marina and I put the text out. The fish had a lower jaw fork length of 112”!!! And a 58” girth!! It went 175” tip to tip. When we put her on the scale she went 600.5 lbs!!!! It was a pumpkin too. Sara and Sadie came down to visit, so that was a great way to end the day. We won’t forget this one! Congrats Patrick!!!
