Rivers have returned to higher flows and water usually looking more brown than green or clear. It was good to have a few days on the upper N. Fork before it blew this past Saturday. Normal for June except for drought years and we fly shop owners, outfitters and guides prefer high water years. We like drought years to be decades apart! Despite runoff conditions on most freestone rivers and streams right now, there are still some places that provides stream of lake options off the beaten path, but often surprisingly close to ever encroaching suburbia. On Father's Day my brother in law and I received the green light to fish somewhere until 5 pm. After, that BBQ and family time. So.......We packed the pontoons boats, rods, gear, etc. and left for a high alpine lake before anyone could change their minds. Mirror is name of the lake we drove to, then hauled the boats one at a time up a b***h of a hill before we could finally set up our fly rods and get busy putting a hook in the trout lazily rolling or flopping in the lake. The drive up was gorgeous with snow in the peaks and wildflowers everywhere. We had to stop a few times for pics, but still made good time to Mirror despite the stops. Mirror sits in a tight 3-5 acre glacial excavation with a fair sized creek coming in. There is no outlet, per se. The outflow was leakage through the top layer of glacial material, mostly granite. Fishing was slow at first despite obvious trout rising here and there on the surface. Fishing below the surface proved very productive. We should have started with a leech and ignored those tempting rises. Purple was the color evidently. After dozens of native Yellowstone cutthroat were netted and released below our pontoon frames, the bite stopped. Nothing else worked regularly after that despite our best efforts. The lake was full of Gammarus scuds, a major food source in these highly productive sub- alpine lakes. I made a so-so video of these scuds swimming the edges of the lake, so you can see the color and the lake's productivity. And some shots showing the color and size (16-22") of the cutthroat. We schlepped the boats back down the hill with arms sore from fighting heavy fish to the net, re-packed the pontoons onto the trailer. Happy and definitely pleased with our location! We even made it home in time to get some bonus points for next Father's Day!

Nicaraguan angler Gabriel Fernandez set the new men’s 8 kg (16 lb) line class world record for Pacific snook (Centropomus spp.) with this incredible 23.13 kg (51 lb) specimen that he caught on July 8, 2016 while fishing out of Quepos, Costa Rica. We just had a great Bimini trip with Tom, Rob, Peter and Elliott. We caught kingfish, huge cero mackerel, barracudas, rainbow runners , mutton snapper, grey snapper, yellow tails, blue runners, amberjacks, horse eye jacks and sharks. On the way home we planned to cash in on the hot mahi action over the last two weeks. We got played. We only caught one mahi, but at least it was a big one.
