I’ve recently read your articles in regards to your “Catfish Week”. I’ve grown up reading Field and Stream and understand with all forms of print media the game is totally different today compared to decades ago yet “Field and Stream” is still is a major name in outdoor sports and I was disappointed to read about the accolades and promotion of catfish paylakes in your articles. Are there paylakes that are ethical and a welcome addition to the community? Sure there are, I won’t deny that, and I won’t even go as far as saying all paylakes are bad. However, there are a large number of paylakes across our country that continue to practice unethical business and are contributing to the decline of trophy catfish by paying rewards and bounties to both private and commercial fisherman in exchange for fish caught in public waters. These fish are a shared resource and not only are they removing them from public waters, they are then taking them and using them to gain profit, over and over and over again by the thousands of pounds. This would be NO DIFFERENT than going onto public lands and tranquilizing trophy whitetail or other big game and then transporting them to their hunting preserve and then charging fees for hunters to shoot them. Does that sound ethical to you? I sure hope not. Regardless of what is legal or not, we need to promote conservation while in the meantime lawmakers and stakeholders can play catch up and outlaw these unethical practices. Fortunately, I live in a state in which the DNR has been proactive to make sure we don’t get into a bind like other states up and down the Mississippi river are now in. I would suggest that Field and Stream put forth some research into this issue, and some due diligence to learn about the battle that is currently going on between paylakes/commercial fisherman and conservative sport anglers and perhaps shed some light on that for one of your “Catfish Week” articles. I’m not even suggesting that you take sides, but at least provide some facts for your readers so they can make up their own mind. Thanks #catfishweek
Steve Matthews is officially retired, and a graduate of the school of Kiss My Ass, according to Facebook. He runs Diddles Pay Lake, and this is him, presiding from his EZ chair, with his rooster, Nuggets, perched on the counter. The bait house at Diddles, and at all other pay lakes, is a constant source of gossip and hope. So-and-so is catching them on shad. That other guy there was using crickets. You can buy a water or soda, or just BS away the midday sun. “Most of my customers are real good people,” Steve said. “We don’t have no problems here.” – Michael R. Shea, contributing editor #CatfishWeek
