Train a Dog to Scent Trail // By T. Edward Nickens Early-season hunts often take place in the heavy cover of beaver ponds and thick timber. A good cripple dog is a major asset. To fine-tune your dog’s nose, cut a piece of PVC pipe about 5 feet in length. (The diameter doesn’t matter—use whatever you’ve got cluttering up your basement.) Run an 8-foot-long section of paracord or other cordage through the pipe, and tie a slip loop to one end. Attach the loop to a bird wing or training bumper treated with duck scent. Hold the pipe out from your body, and drag the wing or bumper along a scent trail through your yard. The pipe prevents your own foot scent from contaminating the trail. Illustration by Robert L. How to Avoid Treble Hooks // By T. Edward Nickens I recently spent a half hour un-trebling a trio of snarled plugs, and more than once I’ve extracted trebles from human flesh. And they rip fish mouths to pieces. I might lose a few fish by going solo, but I’ll save a few more. If you’re fishing with kids, especially, replace treble hooks. In-line Spinners: Most spinner hooks aren’t attached with a split ring, so use side-cutting wire snips to remove the trebles. If the hook eye is particularly stout, clip the eye in two places to create a gap, and slip it off the body wire. Replace with open-eye hooks closed with needle-nose pliers. Hard Baits: Evaluate the track of topwater and diving lures before replacing trebles so you can compare their performance with single hooks. Most will do fine. For many largemouth baits, replace the hooks with 1/0 or 2/0 ringed live-bait hooks. Remove the belly treble altogether, or replace with a ringed live-bait hook with its point facing forward. The hook point on the trailing hook should face up. Illustrations by Robert Prince http://fieldandstre.am/t37JUA
Beautiful king salmon caught on Lake Michigan! Couldn't think of a better way to spend the 4th!
This is the second pair I have bought. Both done this. This pair came loose within a couple of hours.
“Animals give me more pleasure through the viewfinder of a camera than they ever did in the crosshairs of a gunsight. And after I've finished ‘shooting,’ my unharmed victims are still around for others to enjoy.“ - Jimmy Stewart
I bought this the other day for $1.00 Just thought I would share this awesome find.
This week at Fort Riley, Kansas...
How much do you think this fish weighs? This little guy was captured when the Environmental Division surveyed the fish population in Moon Lake yesterday using a shocking boat. This flathead catfish was weighed and returned to the water. We will post its weight in the comments later this week.
How to Build a Log-Cabin Council Fire // By T. Edward Nickens The log cabin council fire is a great warm-weather blaze: It puts out plenty of light with less heat than other campfire lays, and burns a long time with smaller pieces of fuel so you don’t break a sweat hauling Yule logs back to camp. It’s a bit of a pyro mash up. The outside is a log cabin fire built of slow-burning green wood, inside of which burns a teepee fire that throws out tall flames to light your way. Shell Construction First, build the outer shell of a log cabin fire. Start with two 6-inch-diameter logs about 24 inches long, and build a log cabin fire of 2 logs for each of 4 “stories,” using smaller logs as you go up. Choose whole green logs or branches of a slow-burning wood that won’t throw a lot of sparks, such as white oak, ash, birch, or ironwood. Keep these structural logs whole. Split wood burns more quickly, and you want this to burn very slowly. The log-cabin walls will hold the sticks of the teepee fire upright, and that’s the next step. Stoke the Furnace Inside the log cabin structure, build a teepee fire of dry sticks, branches, and split woods. Break some of these pieces into lengths 6 inches taller than the log cabin structure. When burning, they’ll produce tall flames that give out plenty of light. Turn on the Light Inside the teepee, lay your tinder bundle and light it. Now use wood as a mood-setting dimmer switch: Feed the teepee fire from the top as the flames consume the wood. If the log cabin walls start to burn too quickly, dose with water to knock back the flames. Illustration by Steve Sanford

On a recent Thursday afternoon, I met Mark Bollman, the president and founder of Ball and Buck, at a century-old industrial complex, in the working-class Brooklyn neighborhood of Sunset Park. On a top floor of the former factory, Bollman and a small team design the company’s line of premium outdoor apparel, and have covered the walls of their modest space with photographs of sportsmen afield, swatches of camo and plaid, and sketches of shirts and pants. In Bollman’s office hang vintage Remington posters, and an antique bow and shotgun. As an editor, I’m among the last people to see a new product—so that it can be reviewed—before it reaches customers. But that day, I got to see the beginning of the process, when a new coat or shirt is just an idea, months from being worn into the woods. Here are photographs from the excursion, and be sure to check out Ball and Buck's spring and summer lines. —JR Sullivan, associate editor

#SOUTHERNSLAM DAY 5: HOUSES OF THE RISING SUN There’s just enough room between the high-tide line and the dunes to pitch three tents. We’re steps away from surf fishing and clam digging, with a front porch to the biggest star show I’ve seen in years. When night falls, we figure the next closest human being on the beach is a good 15 miles away. —T. Edward Nickens
