It's brown bear Tuesday today isn't it? That's what I heard, or just made up. Here is the second brown bear I killed last week in Alaska with my best buddy and Alaskan guide, Roy Roth, who was working for outfitter Jonah Stewart. As I mentioned before, these guys know their stuff. So legit it's not even funny. Both bowhunting beasts. The pie-in-the-sky, unrealistic goal of this hunt for me was to arrow two brown bear, as this area of Alaska is so teaming with these giant grizzlies that they allow each hunter to fill two tags annually. I told Jonah before heading up that I'd love to hunt the first one spot and stalk and if successful then head to new country and hunt one on bait. So that was the plan. Never mind that the odds of one bowhunter killing two brown bear on the same trip is about 0%, give or take. Dream bigger. Achieve more. After hunting these wary beasts for a few days I can tell you, killing a brown bear on bait is not easy. During the same time I had to have the most patience I ever have on a hunt, I could have killed multiple black bears many times over (did kill one), while waiting for a single chance on big brown bear. We sat from 7:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m. all thru the night. It was only truly dark from about 1:30 to 3:30 a.m. (Alaska in the summer...long days), and that's pretty much the only time the brown bear move. Black bear were in the whole time basically and even a wolf came by at 25 yards in the daylight! The first night sitting we saw nothing but black bear. The second night, finally at 1:30 I looked up and saw a giant bear in the shadows. It looked like a dinosaur after seeing all the black bear. But man was it wary. Roy told me when a brown bear comes in the intensity level skyrockets. He was right. The bear was in and out a few times in the dark. I could see it with my binos but not hardly at all without. When he left at 3:30 I wondered if that was the last I'd see him as the sky was starting to lighten. Thankfully it wasn't. At close to 5:00 he showed again and as if on cue came in perfect, and stopped quartering away. That's what I was waiting on. I hit him with a perfect arrow from 23 yards and he crashed off. That was an intense situation. You can barely breath when a grizzly is in. Roy says you don't even need to make a noise for them to spook, as he thinks they have a sixth sense and can feel your presence. They are incredible. The blood trail was uneventful even though Roy tried to spice it up. We were about 50 yards into the trail when Roy said, "Stop, I heard something." Bowhunters do not want to "hear something" when trailing an animal. An animal moving off making noise as they go is usually never a good sign. I said, I didn't hear anything. We continued on and there he was. He's about a 9-foot bear with a 25" skull. The hair is short which is typical in July and would have weighed about 300 lbs more in the Fall after a couple months of salmon put him at close to 1,000 potentially. We figured he was about 700 lbs now. He is the most amazing bear I've ever arrowed and this kill capped a week a bowhunting I might never top. #uahunt #hoyt4life #brownbeardouble Cameron R.
