Got this guy on camera a couple days ago. Opening day is a week away. Not too bad for a Southern California desert deer.
Any time I need a reminder that the rut is far from a November thing here in the Midwest, I get a pic like this one. My neighbor and hunting buddy Dave Olson was checking cams the other day and found this photo of a spotted fawn. Here in Minnesota, most fawns lost their spots in August, making this one late-bred baby. If this fawn is two months behind, that places its conception date in January or February, proving that the “rut” obviously encompasses more than the peak breeding window (mid-November in my area). Bucks can breed as long as they’re toting antlers, and one of those guys either ran into a fawn entering its first estrous cycle, or a mature doe that got “missed” during the main show. In any event, this is one young whitetail, and it may need a very kind Minnesota winter to survive. —Scott Bestul, whitetails editor #RutReporters2016
Pennsylvania whitetail nut Scott Beebe shot us an update from his morning hunt in the north-central part of the Keystone State, plus a trail cam pic he pulled today of a great buck on the prowl. “Colder temperatures set in here around Oct. 20th, and I’m finally starting to see rubs and scrapes along woods roads, food plots, and travel corridors. Deer have remained on mast crops; acorns, apples, and berries are still abundant but dropping fast. Food plots are still mostly a pass-through; corn fields seem 70% harvested, and are the main destination areas, but plots are still a great place to ambush a seeking buck. “Younger bucks are on their feet earlier in the evening and late in the mornings, like the nice 3-year old in my brassica food plot. The seeking phase of the rut has just arrived, it’s a great time to be on stand earlier in the afternoon. Does are becoming harder to see as they are being harassed at every turn by young bucks. Stayed tuned and stay safe in your tree!” —Scott Bestul, whitetails editor #RutReporters2016
