This one could be in the running for the largest typical killed this season. I just got wind of this giant 6x6 yesterday, and I tracked down Brent Johnson, who manages the Webb County ranch in Texas, where the buck was taken. To be clear, this was a wild, free-range deer. Johnson says the buck green-scored 198 7/8 gross, and he expects it to next 187 after the drying period. Johnson's friend Bill Constable actually shot the deer while hunting with a Managed Deer License permit, which allows rifle hunting beginning Oct. 1. Interestingly, as you can tell in the photo, the buck was still in full velvet. Look for the full story on Fieldandstream.com. —Scott Bestul, whitetails editor #RutReporters2016
I took this 160 inch deer down last Monday morning with my .50 cal muzzleloader. I came into camp the Friday before on the 7th (Eagle Lakes Outfitters Pike County Illinois) and I ended up being sick on opening day and having to go home. Seeing all the other beautiful bucks killed I got the fever and needed to go back that Sunday evening. During the youth weekend I only hunted one time to take him down!
I'm curious to what this might score I shot it last week and only got 1 measurement that was 21" at the largest spread anybody wanna guess? I know nothing about scoring just curios thanks
Arkansas hunter Mark Cole opened the Razorback State’s muzzleloader season by taking this nice 8-pointer. Mark grew up hunting elk and mule deer, so he was pretty excited to take his first whitetail buck. “Our trail cams are showing lots of does, a few small bucks, and the random pig. Acorns are starting to drop and temps have been in the mid 70s for about a week. Hopefully things will cool down some soon!” —Scott Bestul, whitetails editor #RutReporters2016
has any of my fellow hunters ever seen anything like this? This sow bear has 3 cubs which was sleeping beside my corn pile. This raccoon got to close and she ran it down and killed it. First time i have ever seen it.
This is my 15yr old niece, Kassidy Upchurch. She shot this 160 inch bruiser at Eagle Lakes in Pike County Illinois on the last day of youth season with her .50 cal muzzleloader. She got sick on opening day and couldn't hunt and actually went home. After seeing the nice deer harvested by other young hunters on Facebook, she got the fever and returned to the lodge Sunday evening. Monday morning she got her deer.
Minnesota bowhunter Ryan Meyers shot this big buck in Buffalo County, Wisconsin. The mainframe 8-point grossed 165, thanks to plenty of junk and 40 inches of mass measurements. Meyers said the buck was in the area last year, but disappeared over the summer. “He moved back in on Sept. 29, and then he was just all over the place,” he said. “We were getting all kinds of daylight pictures of him.” Meyers took advantage of a cold front last week and shot the buck 45 minutes before dark. “We had a 15-minute stare down, and then he disappeared,” Meyers said. “He came back out 20 minutes later, and I took the first 30-yard shot he gave me.” —Scott Bestul, whitetails editor #RutReporters2016

Love this man for providing for our family. Biggest buck yet. Good job Roger White.
Arkansas hunter Mark Cole sent us this brief report from his lease in the northwest part of the Razorback State: “Our acorns just starting to drop, but the crop does not look exceptional. I’ve seen a few small bucks on the lease during daylight hours and a few does and fawns. Bucks like the one on camera seem to be moving at night yet. This is only my second season hunting whitetails, as I grew up hunting in the West (mule deer and elk) so I have a lot to figure out! Will keep in touch as season progresses!” —Scott Bestul, Whitetails Editor #RuletheRut2016
Harry Pozniak was ready for his deer season to get a shot in the arm. Pozniak, owner of River Valley Farms Hunts and one of our regulars on Rut Reporters, says, “Our season started strong. The deer stayed on their summer patterns for a whole week into our season. After that it has kind of gone south. Our weather turned hot and dry, and we have way too many acorns on the ground. The deer do not have to move far to eat.” But last weekend Pozniak could focus on having fun, as the state’s two-day youth gun season opened. “We had eight young hunters in camp for the weekend, and six of them tagged out, most with their first deer,” he says. “It’s always great to see young kids enjoying the woods. It kind of makes you remember how any deer can be a trophy.” —Scott Bestul, Whitetails Editor #RutReporters2016
Buck activity is picking up in southeast Kansas, according to Whitney Fouts, co-owner of Wicked Outfitters (wickedoutfitters.com). "Bucks are really starting to hit scrapes, and our hunters are seeing lots of fighting and sparring," she says. "Some of these sparring sessions are going on for hours when several bucks are involved." While Fouts says the best hunting is yet to come, that didn't stop Joey Anderson from taking this beautiful 3-1/2 year old 8-point. "He made an awesome shot, and the buck only went 40 yards," Fouts says. "What a great way to get your first buck!" - Scott Bestul, whitetails editor #RutReporters2016
