How do I get to Icy Bay Lodge?

Icy Bay Lodge is located 300 miles ESE of Anchorage between the towns of Cordova and Yakutat (150 miles west and 65 miles east, respectively). The only way to reach Icy Bay Lodge is by plane.  

The most common route is through Seattle, Alaska Air Flight #61 to Yakutat. Alternatively, you may choose to fly through Anchorage to Yakutat, Alaska Air Flight #66. Typically, you will arrive in Yakutat in the late morning. Once you’ve arranged your flight into Yakutat, we will arrange Air Taxi transport to camp. The round trip cost of the Air Taxi will be between $400 & $600 per person and we will put you in touch with the Air Taxi service so you can make payment to them directly. 

We will provide detailed contact information and hotel recommendations (including access to our corporate rates) in your electronic Welcome Package when you book your trip.

What gear do I need?

Keeping it Simple: Waterproof fishing jacket, knee boots, breathable/gortex waders, 7-8wt fly rod, pink or chartreuse flies, good quality rain gear, gloves, insect repellent, polarized glasses, waterproof bag, hook sharpener, needle-nose pliers or hemostat, leader clippers, knife, appropriate assortment of high quality swivels, weights, hooks, new line, extra spools and reel oil or WD-40. Note: In order to continue an exemplary safety record, the Air Taxi does limit your bag & gear to 50lbs.

What's the weather like?

The Icy Bay climate is characterized by mild, rainy weather. Average summer temperatures range from 50 to 65 degrees, while winter averages 15 to 40 degrees. As part of one of the northernmost rainforests in the world, Icy Bay gets some of the heaviest precipitation in Alaska. The weather is wet. Don’t forget to pack your rain gear and clothes that will keep you warm in 40 degrees! You may experience warmer weather and sunshine during your trip, but it is a lot easier to remove layers to get cool than to not have enough layers to stay warm.

Where can I buy a fishing license?

Alaska Fishing License – you will need a non-resident, 7-day, sport fishing license and, if applicable, a King Salmon Stamp (required whether or not you plan to keep your catch). The license can be obtained on the Alaska Department of Fish & Game website

How much should I tip?

We have a very small staff – all of whom will work tirelessly to ensure your comfort, safety and enjoyment at Icy Bay Lodge. A gratuity is not included in the cost of your booking but it is customary to reward outstanding hospitality with a gratuity for the guides and hosts (who share gratuities equally). Traditionally, a gratuity is 10% – 15% of the advertised price of your package.

Do you offer travel insurance?

No, but we strongly recommend protecting yourself against unforeseen misfortunes that could affect your trip. Allianz Global Assistance can provide you with the nominal cost of such insurance and answer any questions you might have regarding coverage.
